BIOGRAPHY

(The obituary comes from the   book "Kelso Kin" by Virginia Naylor Smith.  Following the obituary are some pictures and History provided by John Kelso of  England)

Commander Edward Barrington Purvis Kelso, R.N., Died at Horkesley Park on March 28th, having just completed his 82nd year.  He was one of the oldest officers of his rank on the retired list of the Navy.

By Lineage a member of one of the most ancient Lowland Scots families, he traced his descent from Kelso of Kelsoland before 1057.   Born March 21, 1842, he was the elder son of Captain Edward J.F. Kelso, 72nd Highlanders and Frances, only child and heiress of Barrington Purvis, of Beccles, Suffolk, and Purvis Hall, Essex.  He went to sea in 1854 under a cousin, Admiral Kelso.   In 1861, he served as sub-lieutenant in the first ironclad, and in 1874 retired with the rank of Commander.

He married in 1887 Agnes Marion, only daughter and heiress of Richard Hodgson Galloway, but leaves no issue.  For nearly half a century he had lived as a country squire at Horkesley Park, with a town house in addition, and was a well known member of the Carlton and other clubs.  He was Chairman of the Lenden and Winstree Bench of Magistrates, a deputy Lieutenant for Essex and Lord of the Manor of Great Horkesley.  Here a memorial service was held, he being buried at Lawshall, Suffolk, amid great demonstration of respect and love on April 5th.   His Benefactions to Horkesley included the Working Men's Club, the annual meeting of which he 43 times attended, and St. Johns Chapel of Ease, which he gave in memory of a nephew killed in the South African War.

"HORKESLY PARK IS NOW KNOWN AS LITTLE GARTH SCHOOL AND IS LOCATED ON THE A134 ROAD AT NAYLAND BETWEEN SUDBURY AND COLCHESTER WHICH IS ON THE BORDER BETWEEN SUFFOLK AND ESSEX.

SOME OF THE KELSOS BURIED AT THIS VAULT ARE AS FOLLOWS;

EDWARD JOHN FRANCES KELSO DUKE OF ALBANYS HIGHLANDERS DIED 26.10.1857 AGED 48

FRANCES LETITIA PHILLIPA KELSO WIFE OF THE LATE CAPTAIN KELSO DIED 24.02.1873 AGED 51.

EDWARD ARCHIBALD ROBERT KELSO 2ND SON OF THE LATE CAPT KELSO OF KELSOLAND.DIED 26.10.1871 AGED 27.

I HAVE NO REASON AS TO WHY THE KELSO FAMILY VAULT SHOULD BE LOCATED IN THIS VERY SMALL VILLAGE APART FROM SOME LAND CLOSE BY WAS OWNED BY A FAMILY WITH THE NAME OF PURVIS. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT A LOCAL CHARITY RUN BY THE CHURCH WAS SET UP BY BARRINGTON KELSO IN HIS WILL. THE CHARITY IS KNOWN AS THE EDWARD BARRINGTON PURVIS KELSO CHARITY FOR POOR WIDOWS. ALSO A KELSO PLACE CONTAINING ABOUT 8 HOUSES EXISTS IN LAWSHALL. THE VILLAGE OF LAWSHALL IS LOCATED OFF THE A134 ROAD BETWEEN SUDBURY AND BURY ST EDMUNDS IN SUFFOLK ENGLAND.

IF I CAN HELP ANYONE WITH ANY FUTHER INFORMATION PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL.
